Galerie Gmurzynska presenting a comprehensive group exhibition at this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach featuring a curated display of post-war and contemporary masters, with focus on North and Latin American artists.
The show will continue in the spirit of Galerie Gmurzynska’s ambition to bring 20th Century masters from distinctive traditions together, juxtaposing them in new and innovative perspectives.
The significant selection of 20th century American artists starts with a tribute to pop-art icon Robert Indiana, featuring works from the early-60s to the late-90s.
Further to this, the survey will spotlight two female artists: Louise Nevelson, whose estate has been represented by Galerie Gmurzynska for many years, and Marjorie Strider, a lesser-known but highly regarded rare example of a female Pop-Artist.
The exhibition will bring together works by Latin American masters such as Roberto Matta, the Chilean artist who was highly respected by Marcel Duchamp and is often credited as being an initiator of the New York Surrealist movement, as well as the Cuban painter Wifredo Lam, who is considered one of the pioneers of modernism in Europe, Asia, and America. Works by Robert Motherwell, Alexander Calder, Allen Jones, David Smith, and Joaquín Torres García among others will complete the presentation.
COLLABORATION WITH CHRISTO
Continuing the extremely fruitful collaboration between Galerie Gmurzynska and Christo, which over the last few years has produced several major exhibitions from Hong Kong to Zurich, the gallery will show a selection of rare New York Gates collages at this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach. Having just concluded an important retrospective – held at both Zurich gallery locations – of Christo’s large-scale Shop Window Installations, as well as his early museum projects such as the Museum of Modern Art Wrapping, it is an honor to share the energy that Christo radiates with each such collaboration.
