Galerie Gmurzynska is pleased to present an exhibition of rare, unique ceramics by Wifredo Lam.
From 1960, Lam divided his time between Paris and Albissola, Italy; the town on the Ligurian coast has been well-known since the first half of the 16th century for the manufacture of ceramics traded all over the world. In the 1930s, the Futurist movement reached Albissola, but only from the 1950s onwards did it become a meeting place for artists, intellectuals, writers and the most important personalities of the time.
The manufacture of ceramics, fusing earth and fire, is one of the earliest creative practices of mankind. Lam explored eagerly the vast possibilities this medium could offer. In his own words: “Often I couldn’t sleep, waiting for the surprises of those unexpected tones.”
