Robert Indiana
Exhibition dates: September 9, 2014 – February 20, 2015
Galerie Gmurzynska Zug is pleased to announce a career-spanning exhibition of the work of Robert Indiana. Opening on the occasion of Zuger Kunstnacht, works from each of the artist's iconic series of paintings, unique sculptures, prints and aluminum sculptures will be on display. Together they form a retrospective look at one of the most important artists of the twentieth century and a living legend. Working alongside Ellsworth Kelly and Agnes Martin in Lower Manhattan in the late 1950s, Indiana formed the nucleus of pop art, introducing direct, sign like text into painting, at a time when abstract expressionism had all but suffocated the New York art world. In the 1960s, with Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, Indiana became a household name for this new form of art, one that has become the most influential of the past century. Galerie Gmurzynska is proud to continue its deep personal relationship with the work of Indiana, continuing our decade-long academic exploration of this influential and mythic artist.
