Art Basel Hong Kong 2016 Booth 3E11
Galerie Gmurzynska is pleased to announce its booth at this year’s Art Basel Hong Kong fair.
Specializing in twentieth-century modern masters across the globe by honoring their roots in Western and Eastern avant-gardes, the Americas and Asia, the gallery will bring important works to Hong Kong, focusing on three distinct artists: Fernando Botero, Wifredo Lam and Pablo Picasso.
In Hong Kong Galerie Gmurzynska will show canvases by the Cuban-Chinese Lam that range from the early 1940s to his mature figurative abstractions from the 1970s.
Lam’s works, especially from the 1940s, today are highly sought after since they constitute the highlights of the definitive collections of Lam such as at the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the National Museum in Havana; and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
Wifredo Lam’s critically acclaimed retrospective including important loans by Galerie Gmurzynska is soon to open at the Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid from where it will travel to Tate Modern, London in the fall of 2016.
Galerie Gmurzynska will further show an expansive and recent body of work by Fernando Botero, comprising his humorous and commanding larger-than-life portraits the Santas, based on female saints and martyrs alongside the artist’s gleaming bronzes of the female nude and mythological themes.
Botero continues to remain one of the most widely recognized artists working today, whose painting cycle The Way of the Cross is currently exhibited at the Palazzo delle Espozioni, Rome. His work was further included in the widely discussed showcase of the Würth Collection at the Martin-Gropius Bau Berlin, entitled “From Hockney to Holbein”.
Select paintings, sculptures and unique ceramics by Picasso will complement this year’s exhibition in Hong Kong, with an emphasis on artists and works that have a solid footing both within twentieth century art history and the art market in general.
